it is really interesting to study about Asian here in America since I come from Asian, I can see a totally different aspect of seeing Asian here. It attracts me a lot. like, I study Japanese here, feel a interesting feeling of western people studying Asian language. and the Asian study class is interesting too. I’ve never think about the country North Korea which is right next to us before. but Americans seem see it as a very mysterious country. it’s totally isolated from the rest of the world and nobody know what they really like and we don’t know why they make the nuclear weapon either. their supreme leader Kim Jong-il is like a God in North Korea. everybody worship him for whatever the reason. I just watched a documentry about Kim Jong-il yesterday and it really gave me a new idea of North Korea.

Kim Jong-il was turned out to be evil in his early age. His brother, “Shura” Kim, drowned in 1948, when he was only two years old. It is said that Kim Jong-il might have caused the accident, or he watch his brother die.
after the Korea Wat, Kim Jong-il came back to North Korea from China but don’t know anything about North Korea. He was short, looked not like a royalty at all, and he acted awkward too. Kim Jong-il is crazy about movies and art, and he knows that movies can rewrite the story of the country. He has about 20,000 western movies in his house.
He even watches 007 movies,haha. and he got a good idea of confuse his people by movies too. films can change the history!

I’ve been so busy this semester taking 18 units. And now, after the spring break, I feel kind of back to life. anyway, everything’s going well. More and more students are asking me questions about American and SDSU. I was busy talking with them everyday when I got free time. I feel like they are just like me 2 years ago, nervous, worried and exicted.

Recently, I got to know a applicant of SDSU. He has been a exchange student in the USA in high school and he wants to come back to California and do his undergraduate program here. He got a blog which is very famous in China and he even wrote a book. this book is about his life in America, like a diary. I borrowed the english version of this book from my boss. it’s really a interesting diary. I can tell that he went through the same emotion like us, homesick has been a big problem too.

The life here in San Diego is geting more interesting and I got more things to do every semester. homesickness has come once or twice, but I’ve got used to the new life here. This summer, my parents are gonna come to see me too. I can’t wait to see them!

who is Kwame Nkrumah?

Today I went to a lecture which gave us information about African American culture. The instructor was very active and humorous. He gave us a very African beginning of the lecture; he thanked his ancestors, his family, and the government in the very beginning of his speech. The lecture mainly talked about a representative person in African American—-Kwame Nkrumah. Kwame Nkrumah had a very important contribution to organizing the Africans and fight for their independence and freedom. The African Union declared at its Assembly’s 13th Ordinary Session, that 21 September, 2009 should be celebrated by all member states of the union as the 100th celebration of the birthday anniversary of Kwame Nkrumah, who graduated in 1939 with his bachelor degree and got his master degree in 1942 because of his vital role in establishing the African Union and his vital role in the liberation of the continent.
Nkrumah linked the traditions of West African nationalism and Pan-African nationalism. African nationalism is the nationalist political movement for one unified Africa, or the less significant objective of the acknowledgment of African tribes by instituting their own states, as well as the safeguarding of their indigenous customs. Pan-African nationalism represents the aggregation of the historical, cultural, spiritual, artistic, scientific and philosophical legacies of Africans from past times to the present. Pan-African nationalism as an ethical system traces its origins from ancient times, and promotes values that are the product of the African civilization and the struggles against slavery, racism, colonialism, and neo-colonialism. Kwame Nkrumah was a Pan-African activist who became the first president of Ghana. He initiated and developed the first Pan-African liberated state—-free government in modern history. He elevated Pan-African agency to the level of countries. Nkrumah also developed the notion of socialist African union as the optimal zone for the African personality, genius and agency. While the US is a capitalism country, which means they want anything that use to bring back a profit, the capitalism system gave the African Americans a notion that they don not need to go to school but just need a job. However, Nkrumah gave them a notion of to be a better human. Nkrumah offered a formal philosophy to defend the ideology of the African revolution. At first, Americans had to chain the African Americans or they would run away. However, overtime, through the way of education, they confused people; they chain people from their mind. What Nkrumah did is he freed African Americans’ mind. He initiated the first African state sponsored effort for afro centric reserves.
Nkrumah told four stages of independence of Africans to delegate at the African Freedom Fighters conference in Accra in 1958. They were attainment, consolidation, unity and community between free African States and economic and social reconstruction of Africa. Africa is poor because they have been stolen resource from Africa—-Africans. Nkrumah made a statement the conference to persuade African independent countries to unite together to be a “the united states of Africa”, so they could be more powerful.
This speech impressed me by the fight of Africans to be independent. The ethnic of African Americans have fought for around 400 years and now, they are equal to anyone in the world. The descendent is the past, Africans can be black and be Americans, French or whatever they want.

my new course

haven’t post anything for a long time. 18 units are really a heavy course. i took a class which is totally new to me–African American study. i totally have no idea of what is African American history or culture, i took this class just because it is a required class. i was asked to do a presentation on the topic of African American history and culture. so i did a lot of research on the internet. i focused on the history of the civil rights movement and the political impact it has. i searched the detail of two representative movements in the civil rights movement. one is the montgomery bus boycott. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a public bus to make room for a white passenger. Parks was arrested because of violated a local ordinance of transportation segregation. After word of this incident reached the black community, 50 African-American leaders gathered and organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott to demand a more humane bus transportation system. And this movement had been pushed for full desegregation of public buses. With the support of most of Montgomery’s 50,000 African Americans, the boycott lasted for more than a year until the local ordinance segregating African-Americans and whites on public buses was lifted. Ninety percent of African Americans in Montgomery took part in the boycotts, which reduced bus revenue by 80%.In November 1956, the movement successfully made a result that Montgomery’s buses had been desegregated. I have studied this part of history before,but the only thing i know is that Martin luther King contributed a lot. It seems that I’m gonna have to search a lot more info about African Americans this semester:)

Los Angeles trip

after the Christmas, me and three of my friends went to Los Angeles. we stayed there for 4days and visited Disneyland and Universal studio. we planed to go there by public transport and it’s really troublesome. we googled the way to go to Disney and Universal. However, there is a big distence for 30 miles between Disney and Universal. If we take the public transport, it will take us 3 hours, so we have to take a cab. it took us 100 bucks:’(. and my friend even left her purse in the cab, but thank god, the kind driver send it back to us. Disneyland was so besutiful at the christmas time~ big christmas tree~blue castle covered with lights and “snow”.
most of the places in Disneyland are for kids, very cute and not so exciting, i took and small rollercoaster and they are not scaring at all. actually, i’m very scared of the rollercoasters, but those are fine for me. there is another theme park called california adventure. it’s much more exciting than Disneyland. i dare not to take the rollercoaster there at all. so we watched the 3D movies and took pictures. I went to Universal studio once before, I think that the Universal studio has much fun than the Disneyland. the performence of water world was fabulous and many different kinds of 4D movies and rollercoasters are just fit for me:). the Hollywood tour is very interesting too.

finals

yes, this is time for the finals. I’ve been busy for two weeks and had no time for enough sleep. essays and reports…hundreds of pages to read for history, OMG, I hope I can finish all the finals in one day!

today is my birthday. I don’t know what I mean by today, Chinese time, American time…I am confused, haha~

anyway, it’s my birthday. My 19 Birthday. My 18 is gone…and I don’t know where did it go~

I had a big party with many friends on my last birthday. But this time, I feel not excited about the birthday thing at all.

no party, no invitation.

I got 25 more “happy birhday to you” already though. that’s nice, and ……I’m 19…

on fire?

yesterday when i go to the trolley station,i saw that the house accross road to trolley station was on fire. more than half of the house was on fire and there were many cops there. this is the first time i saw such a big fire here on campus and the scaring thing is that my friends have suggested me to live there this semester but i didn’t go.
some of my friends told me that it was on fire from the day before yesterday.

Native Indian lecture

I went to a lecture about Native Indian.

I saw our president there! It’s so hard to see him…I have just seen him once before.

he introduced us a famous professor from UCLA.

Then she gave us a great lecture about the Public Law 280.

Since I’m taking a Indian History class, I can get extra credit from this, haha~

Native Indian tales

I went to the Scripps Cottage to night to listen to some presentations about American Indian Art & Spoken Word Showcase.
A group of presentation is Luiseno Storytelling Group. They are also Native Indians, and the woman graduated from SDSU! They came from the family of story telling, and that were about to give us stories about animals. It is said that a long time ago, animals on the earth were living together and they can talk. The first story they tell is Cottontails Song, which is a story between a cottontail and a coyote. The coyote heard the cottontail singing a good song and he was eager to learn it. So, the coyote went to ask the cottontail to sing it for him, but the cottontail didn’t want to. The coyote begged the cottontail for a while and the cottontail finally sang it. However, the coyote forgot how to sing it, so he went to ask the cottontail to sing it for him again, like this for three times. The cottontail got mad, so the coyote suggested having a competition of strongest Lang to win the ownership of the song, and the cottontail agreed. They found a cave and made a fire at the entrance of it, then took turns to get into the cave and see who can stay in the cave for longer time. At last the cottontail won but the coyote did not know that there is a hole in the end of the cave that for the cottontail to escape. However, the cottontail still shared the song with others. So this is the story of sharing songs.
Most Indian tales are talking about why the thing is what it likes. Another one is the telling how the red bird got her color. The raccoon made the coyote angry by saying him lazy. Then the coyote chased the raccoon to a river, the raccoon hide on a branch above the river, the coyote saw the reflection in the river and tried to catch the “raccoon” hardly. At last he is too tired and asleep. The raccoon blocked coyote’s eyes with something stick while he was sleeping. When the coyote woke up and found he blind, he was so scared and asked someone to help. The brown bird came and helped him and the coyote promised to paint her of beautiful color. So the bird colored herself red. That’s how the red bird came from.
